About the University

Fujian Normal University (FNU) is located in the Cangshan District, Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian Province and a famous overseas Chinese hometown in southeast China. Bordering the Minjiang River on the north, overlooking fertile fields, and boasting a convenient transportation system, Fuzhou is reputed as both an ancient city with rich Chinese cultural tinges and a newly prosperous industrial city and tourist attraction. Founded in 1907, FNU has gone through many vicissitudes over the past century. Prior to 1949 the FNU was several separate schools: Hua Nan Women's College of Arts and Science, Fukien Christian University, Fujian Provincial Normal Professional School, Fujian Provincial Institute for Research and Fujian College. In 1949 these schools were all brought together under the government administration and renamed Fujian Normal University. The Hua Nan Women's College beautiful main building still stands and is used by FNU as offices. It has grown into a comprehensive university of both the arts and sciences consisting of 27 colleges with 58 specialties for majors and professional training. 69 disciplines offer M.A. degrees and 18 offer Ph.D. degrees. A complete training system has been formed under which programs for B.A., M.A., Ph.D. degrees and postdoctoral research are provided. Currently, the university has 1,232 teaching and research staff, of whom half are professors, associate professors and research fellows. It also facilitates affairs with its affiliated kindergarten, primary school and secondary school.

International Education

Founded in 1988, The International College of Chinese Studies of the Fujian Normal University (formerly International Cultural and Educational Exchange Center, FNU) was authorized by the State Education Commission as one of the four Chinese teaching bases to admit students from Southeast Asia. In 1997, it received its current name. The International College of Chinese Studies of the Fujian Normal University undertakes the work of recruiting, teaching and advising foreign students for degree and non-degree courses. The school has a well-equipped administrative system, qualified teachers, and modest teaching and learning means. However, complaints have been filed by numerous students with regard to the living conditions. Buildings and dormitories often do not meet appropriate safety standards.

International Student Life

Most of the international students come from neighbouring Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan and Korea. The International Students College is near many shopping areas including Student Street(学生街), Baolong Mall (宝龙城市广场), Taijiang (台江), and Dongbai Yuan Hong (东百元洪).
